Funded by the partnership between the Australian Government's Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, Earthwatch Australia is delivering the Protecting Wetlands for the Future program. It is a unique citizen science initiative, enabling Queensland students and teachers to inform Great Barrier Reef tidal wetland protection.

Trained in the proven and highly successful MangroveWatch methodologies, student and teachers completed mangrove and saltmarsh condition assessments and biomass measurements across four GBR regions; Cairns, Mackay, North Keppel Island and Gladstone. To date, this program has seen 531 students in the field, 41 ecological surveys conducted, 17 schools participating, and the development of lesson plans and training videos to extend learnings.
